Centre discriminating against West Bengal over the drought situation: Buddhadeb

Swapan Mukherjee| Kolkata | 1st September, 2010

Scape photo

West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee has criticized the centre for not cooperating with the state government in releasing approved funds, which was causing serious problem to tackle existing drought situation prevailing in most districts in the state.

The chief minister said it was most unfortunate that the centre was not clearing the arrear amount despite his taking up the matter personally with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. He said that such “ non-cooperation” particularly when the state government  was facing  difficulties  because of the scanty rainfall this  year was “unfair” and  added that the state government was  exploring all possibilities by ensuring alternative means of  agriculture  in the present  situation. He said that the going would be difficult in the absence of the centre’s delay in releasing Rs 140 crore which has been pending for sometime under the rural employment generation scheme.

The chief minister made the statement while addressing a  programme of the left front here. He said that his government was attaching special importance to the creation of rural employment as most parts of the state was reeling under drought situation and  the approved finance must be made available to meet such emergency situation. The CPI(M) politburo member said that they were now left with no other alternative than to go to the people to expose the “discriminating” attitude of the central government particularly when the state was  facing  hardship because of poor  monsoon.

Bhattacherjee regretted that the Trinamool Congress, a constituent of the ruling UPA government at the centre, was spreading “falsehood” everyday to mislead the people for gaining political mileage and made it clear that the main opposition party in the state was depending only on lies; nothing but lies. He averred that The Trinamool Congress was spreading lies in almost every issue in the state adding that the left front would campaign seriously to “expose” the main opposition party.

He wondered that how long the people of this left leaning state would tolerate such politics of misleadings and expressed his determination to ensure that the opposition parties could do no more harm for the people at large.

Senior left front leaders including the chairman Biman Bose criticized the opposition party for its role on the extremist issue and spreading lies. They said that the left parties would campaign all over the state to keep the people informed about the existing situation so that the people can get the true picture.
